Punta Gorda is the seat of Charlotte County, on a point of land in Charlotte Harbor that has been on maps as Punta Gorda ("fat point") since at least 1851. The town was platted in the mid-1880s and grew into a busy port once the railroad arrived.
After Hurricane Charley in 2004 the city rebuilt its waterfront, adding the Harborwalk, a waterfront promenade that links parks and marinas along the harbor.
